Week of December 9

We had such a fun filled week, check out all our activities and make sure to speak with your kinder about all the fun ☺️
Students began the week by listening to the story of the gingerbread man and sharing their favourite part of the story. First students drew a detailed picture, then labeled their drawing using their understanding of letter and letter sounds to stretch out the word and write, last they coloured (remembering to stay in the lines).  Below are a few examples:

During center time students had an opportunity to play at the bakery and gingerbread building center, rolling out and decorating their cookies.

On Wednesday we read and brainstorm different ways to be kind during the holiday season.  Students drew and coloured these beautiful light bulbs with different acts of kindness for example: giving my mommy and daddy a hug, cleaning up with a friend or sharing with others at center time.  We then ‘lit up our classroom with kindness’ by hanging these beautiful lights up to remind us of how to be kind!!

We ended the week with painting these adorable polar bears with snowflakes!

Please remember next week is school spirt week ☺️ We will start the week with wearing either red or green or BOTH! Since red is my favourite I’m sure you can guess what I will wear!

"The Gingerbread Man" Activities

We have been busy reading various versions of the traditional story, "The Gingerbread Man".
Students are really enjoying participating in the story by saying repeating lines, using puppets to re-tell the story in their own words, working in the new dramatic play area "The Sugar Plum Bakery", and making "gingerbread" cookies (fine motor activity; colouring and cutting).

We can Build!

We have been learning about what makes a strong building through our inquiry based on the story The Three Little pigs.   Students have had opportunities to build structures using paper "straw", wooden sticks and block "bricks". We have discussed the words stable, sturdy, floor, walls, windows, roof, door.  We then made our own "Builder's Plan".
Students have had opportunities to learn through dramatic play in the "Construction zone" where they are builders as well as retell the story through puppets. We have enjoyed having students perform the play for us in class!

Week of November 25

This week students focused on building houses with the three little pigs in mind!
Students brainstormed what a strong house was, for example it is heavy like a brick house, glued together with cement and has no holes; So when the big bad wolf huffs and puffs  it will not blow down!

Later in the week students build houses with the unifix cubes and counted each block. Each child chose the number of blocks that they were most comfortable working with; some chose less than 5 blocks  others decided to work with more than 10. Next they drew a picture to match their building and finally matched the number of blocks in their drawing to the number in our chart!
